Self-Managing Database Systems (SMDB)

When: Monday 7th, 9.00 - 12.00 and 13.30 - 17.30
Location: Tulum A

Information management systems are growing rapidly in scale and complexity, while skilled database administrators are becoming rarer and more expensive. Increasingly, the total cost of ownership of information management systems is dominated by the cost of people, rather than hardware or software costs. This economic dynamic dictates that information systems of the future be more automated and simpler to use, with most administration tasks transparent to the user. The aim of this workshop is to exchange ideas related to autonomic, or self-managing, information systems in an intimate, informal, and interactive environment. The format of the workshop will be a one-day workshop on the first day of ICDE, in which accepted papers will be presented in a single track and discussed by all participants.

RFID Data Management (RFDM)

The International Workshop on RFID Data Management (RFDM'08) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners that work on problems related to managing data produced by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or other traceability and automated identification (Auto ID) technologies. The workshop will serve as a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art, present their contributions, and set future directions in the area of Auto ID data management.

Data and Services Management in Mobile Environments (DS2ME)

Wireless and portable device technologies are democratizing access to information and services. Such technologies contribute to make information and services available anytime and anywhere. This has led to the development of numerous original services and systems in various application fields such as e-Commerce, e-Learning or transport systems. However, such systems constrained resources in terms of autonomy, network bandwidth or storage capacity, mobile devices (mobile phones, PDA…) have highly impacted traditional data and services management techniques. Therefore, these techniques are evolving and leading to new data and services management systems that consider variable user capabilities and context characteristics. The next generation of such systems in mobile environments will have to provide different levels of availability. In addition, they will have to be adaptive, scalable, robust and efficient for developing numerous original services and systems.

Networking Meets Databases (NetDB)

The Fourth International Workshop on Networking Meets Databases (NetDB '08) will bring together researchers in the networking and database communities. The growth of many areas—from sensor networks, to peer-to-peer systems and networks designed using database principles (and vice versa), to network monitoring systems that depend on advanced data management and analysis capabilities— suggests a blurring of the boundaries between database and networking research and the need for research that spans the two disciplines. The goal of the workshop is to promote discussion of ideas that will influence and foster continued research that draws heavily from both communities. The workshop will provide a venue for researchers to discuss key challenges and present new ideas that can significantly impact both communities.

Information Integration Methods, Architectures, and Systems (IIMAS)

Information integration continues to play a mission critical role in a diversity of applications from E-Commerce to life sciences to ecology to disaster management. These applications rely on the ability to integrate information from multiple heterogeneous sources. The requirements range from robust well engineered and reliable solutions to on-the-fly best effort integration. While there has been much progress in formalizing a research framework and developing methodologies and architectures, the emergence of Web 2.0, distributed sensor networks, data streams, P2P networks, etc., continue to raise new challenges. This 1.5 day workshop will bring together a diverse group of researchers from the database, AI and WWW communities. The topics to be addressed include the methods, architectures, and systems to support information integration.

Similarity Search and Applications (SISAP)

The International Workshop on Similarity Search and Applications (SISAP) is a new conference devoted to similarity searching, with emphasis on metric space searching. It aims to fill in the gap left by the various scientific venues devoted to similarity searching in spaces with coordinates, by providing a common forum for theoreticians and practitioners around the problem of similarity searching in general spaces (metric and non-metric) or using distance-based (as opposed to coordinate-based) techniques in general. SISAP aims to become an ideal forum to exchange real-world, challenging and exciting examples of applications, new indexing techniques, common testbeds and benchmarks, source code, and up-to-date literature through a Web page serving the similarity searching community. Authors are expected to use the testbeds and code from the SISAP Web site for comparing new applications, databases, indexes and algorithms.

Ranking in Databases (DBRank)

The Second International Workshop on Ranking in Databases (DBRank'08) focuses on the semantics, the modeling and the implementation of ranking and ordering in database systems and applications. In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in developing effective techniques for ad-hoc search and retrieval in relational databases, document and multimedia databases, scientific information systems, and so on. In particular, a large number of emerging applications require exploratory querying on such databases; examples include users wishing to search databases and catalogs of products such as homes, cars, cameras, restaurants, and photographs. To address the limitations of the traditional Boolean retrieval model in these emerging ad-hoc search and retrieval applications, Top-k queries and ranking query results are gaining increasing importance. In fact, in many of these applications, ranking is an integral part of the semantics, e.g., keyword search, similarity search in multimedia as well as document databases. The increasing importance of ranking is directly derived from the explosion in the volume of data handled by current applications. The sheer amount of data makes it almost impossible to process queries in the traditional compute-then-sort approach. Hence, ranking comes as a great tool for soliciting user preferences and data exploration.

Secure Semantic Web (SSW)

Today data is becoming one of the most critical resource in many organizations. The relevant role data are playing in each businesses requires to devise efficient and secure mechanism for managing them ... As the Web evolves into the Semantic Web, there are more and more possibilities for security breaches as we introduce new technologies. Therefore, it is critical that security is considered right from the beginning of expansion of the Semantic Web. For the semantic Web to be secure we need to ensure that all of the layers of the Semantic Web are secure. This includes secure XML, secure RDF, secure ontologies, and ensure the secure interoperation of all these technologies. Security research for the Semantic Web is just at the beginning. This workshop aims to provide a forum where novel research results in security in semantic Web can be presented.

Data Engineering for Blogs, Social Media, and Web 2.0 (DEBSM)

Social media systems such as weblogs, photo and link sharing sites, wikis and on-line forums are estimated to produce up to one third of new Web content. Several things set these "Web 2.0" sites apart from traditional Web pages and resources: they are often annotated with semantic metadata, they are intertwined with human social networks and their constituent parts exhibit a rich set of relations and connections through comments, trackbacks, advertisements, tags, and other metadata. Developing models of these new information sources, understanding how to manage them, and developing techniques to extract useful information from them are topics of keen interest. This one-day ICDE workshop will focus on the data engineering/data management / data mining issues that arise out of work in the area of social media and Web2.0 applications. The participatory and non central controlled nature of such applications opens several new vistas for research. The dominant focus of the workshop will be on presentation of refereed papers both long and short. We will also plan to have a keynote and/or a panel discussion.

Mining Multimedia Streams in

This workshop solicits state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of multimedia stream mining in large-scale environments. The workshop will provide a compelling forum for researchers and practitioners to present their results in several diverse disciplines, including signal processing, multi-modal multimedia mining and analytics, multimedia streaming systems, large-scale distributed stream processing systems etc.
